World's News Headlines Still Reeling with Doom and Gloom, but Economic and Business News Strongly Upbeat, New Metric Finds
Although news organizations around the world worked to bring their audiences a good mix of stories and feature articles, on balance, the news for the first day of 2008 featured more negative stories than positive.
In fact, according to a new metric published by the Russian News Network (www.russiannewsnetwork.com), a worldwide headline news service and story aggregator online since 2001, most of Tuesday's news focused on negative themes and stories, with the day's news scoring a 37 on the site's "News Upbeativity Index."
The News Upbeativity Index ranges from 0 to 100, with a score of 100 indicating that the day's news has been completely upbeat and positive while a score of 0 indicates that the news is as bad as it can get. A score of 50 indicates neutrality.
However, while General News around the world tended to reflect themes that were less than upbeat, the world's Economic and Business News was generally upbeat, scoring 71 on the News Upbeativity Index, or a full 21 points above the neutral point.
The Russian News Network plans calculate and publish Upbeativity scores (for both General News and Economic/Business News) on its website each day for the rest of the year.
"As a tool for quantifying and measuring the nature of the news that the public sees and hears each day, we think our Upbeativity Index represents a unique, quantifiable metric of interest to researchers, academics and the general public."
About the News Upbeativity Index
The News Upbeativity Index ranges from 0 to 100, with a score of 100 indicating that the day's news has been completely upbeat and positive while a score of 0 indicates that the news is as bad as it can get. A score of 50 indicates neutrality.
Raw scores are rigorously calculated through the use of a proprietary mathematical formula developed by the Russian News Network and is then refined through a series of weighted coefficients designed to appropriately scale the contribution of each news datum that enters into the calculation framework.
